Hi, I’m Jen. I like to eat, and I like to write. Mostly about eating.

I also like traveling. Mostly to eat.

I also like squirrels. They really like to eat, so I got them a table. Manners!

I used to write a food blog called Under the Table with Jen but nowadays I just sit at my table and write cookbooks and watch the squirrels eat. I think this is what they call “living the dream.”

I’m the author of Portland’s 100 Best Places To Stuff Your Faces and Portland Family Adventures (Sasquatch 2017), and I’ve co-authored five cookbooks with the marvelous magical Marnie Hanel— the IACP Award-winning The Picnic (Artisan 2015), The Campout Cookbook (Artisan 2018), Summer: A Cookbook (Artisan 2020), The Snowy Cabin Cookbook (Artisan 2021), and Lunchbox (Artisan 2022). Lunchbox comes out this summer and it’s about kids’ lunches. Kids like to eat too, especially if you cut their food into the shape of a bear (see: bottom right).

I’m a former journalist turned kindergarten teacher turned James Beard Award-winning food and travel writer, and you can find my work in Condé Nast TravelerEaterZagatThe Oregonian, and Serious Eats, among others.

If I’m not writing a cookbook or an article about how to take the fussiest entrée possible to a picnic or cutting food into shapes (for my own lunch, I don’t have any kids, just squirrels), I’m probably hanging out at a farmers market, browsing a chocolate shop, or planning my next trip to France.

If you have something for me to write or eat, please get in touch!

Merci,
Jen
